Military Spouse Wellness Summit 2019

I sat in the chair at the hair salon recently, looking pretty cute in the black cape, like we girls do. My stylist brushed out my long hair and asked me when the last time I had a haircut. She examined my split-ends and her facial expression made it clear I was long overdue for a trim. I thought about it for a minute.

Let’s see, I remember it was baseball season because I wanted to hurry out of the salon in time to scoot over to the ballfield and see my son pitch. That’s right, my last haircut must have been last spring.

My stylist looked horrified when I confirmed this to her, but honestly, that had become the norm for me.

I’ve got 3 kids with busy schedules to juggle, grocery shopping, meals to cook, uniforms to wash, and a million other things that make my family’s life running smooth. Very much, I’m sure, like you.

Had I neglected my own self-care, and put my family first? Absolutely.

Do I deserve the same level of attention that my kids receive? Of course.

And yet, my children had never missed a practice, a meal, a doctor appointment or a haircut.

My self-care had taken a deep dive to the bottom of the list.

That was my wake-up call.

Self-Care is not Selfish

I’ve since made changes to other areas of my life, like scheduling regular fitness classes, going out of town for a writing conference (just for me!), and a discipleship conference.

My kids are old enough to enjoy staying with friends and I’m lucky to have that option.

There was a time, not long ago, when traveling to a personal growth conference would have been impossible. Who would watch the kids? How could I pay for travel? And hotel costs? Forget about it.

As much as I would have loved the time away to re-charge and come back as a better version of Momma to my family, there was no way.

This is where the 4th annual Military Spouse Wellness Summit hosted by Independent comes in.

Did you know this upcoming virtual wellness retreat offers an incredible line-up of speakers to address the specific needs of military spouses?

In a world where it can seem like nobody understands our unique lifestyle and challenges as military spouses, Independent assures us that we are not alone.

Life on Purpose

This year’s summit theme is Life on Purpose. I believe our purpose, as military spouses and as women, changes with each duty station, with each season, but is always worth pursuing.

Otherwise, it might be another 8 months before you realize you need a haircut.

The summit is also a great place to connect with other military spouses. Maybe you live far from your duty station, or aren’t finding the friendships you hoped. This is a perfect way to reach out and see that you are part of a larger group and that other people understand your crazy life. You will likely leave the summit empowered with a greater sense of purpose for your current season of life, and energized to life intentionally, right where you are.

I know I can’t wait.

I hope you’ll join me this year at Independent’s Military Spouse Wellness Summit March 4-9, 2019.

I repeat: No childcare. No travel. No missed work.

Listen to the speakers whenever it’s convenient for you. I’ll for sure be listening while folding the mountain of laundry that seems to never end.

Besides inspiring speakers, there will be a wellness lounge with cooking and fitness segments, and prizes given out throughout the week!

I’m grateful for the work Independent has put into this summit, acknowledging the need for military spouses to live more intentionally, instead of keeping their purpose on the back-burner.

You sincerely owe it to yourself to give personal growth and wellness a little attention.

And what could be more fun than joining military spouses around the globe to cheer each other on in living more meaningful lives?

I truly hope to “see” you there!
